The SSAI is the only anesthesia organisation in Scandinavia that addresses postgraduate education and training on a general level. It takes formal responsibility for postgraduate training programs for the members of the Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive care Medicine.

The development of these postgraduate training programs and the establishment of individual courses is supported by the Educational Committee via grants from the ACTA Foundation.

All courses are intended for specialists in anaesthesiology and SSAI members (all members of the Danish, Icelandic, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish National Anaesthesiology Societies are automatically members of SSAI), but exceptions can be made if the hospitations can be performed in Scandinavia and the applicant can demonstrate knowledge of the Scandinavian system.

More recently, the SSAI has supported an exchange programme developed by the Nordic Young Anaestheologist committee
